Molly read her first book!!

I am having a proud parent moment...Molly just read her first book with really only a little help from me! I've known that she was close to starting to read for a while now as she is always spelling things to me (that she sees on signs, etc) and then asking what they spell. The other night she was really starting to sound out words on her own, so I decided it was time to get a "first reader" book. I was surprised at how well she did both with recognizing sight words and sounding out words.

It is cool as a parent to watch your child learn. We've been watching both Molly and Elliana learn everything from eating solids, to crawling, walking, talking and so on. For some reason, watching Molly learn to read has been one of the most exciting "firsts" for me. I have always enjoyed reading. Well, I enjoyed reading as a child. Then, it was ruined during years of high school honors English where I was a procrastinator and would have to spend entire weekends reading 3-5 books (most which I wasn't interested in). But, the enjoyment of reading is slowly starting to creep back into my life. All that to say, I really think Molly will be one that loves to read. Since she was very little she has been content to sit and listen to us read to her for hours. So, with this first little accomplishment, I hope that a love of reading is already beginning. (She was quite proud and excited that she was able to read a whole book by herself, but she was quick to make sure we would still read to her : ) I assured her that I'm not ready to give up reading her stories so no worries there!)

As a teacher, I must say I think it's awesome you are so excited. It's amazing to watch a child fill with pride when they finish their first book. I think when I finally experience my own child reading on her own, I will hire a pilot to announce it to all of southern california in skywriting.

ps - i LOVE your hair. Good choice!

CONGRATS!! That's very exciting!! It's still so hard to believe she won't even be in Kindergarten for a whole year. Crazy!! Maybe she'll just teach the class by then. ;)

Hey!! Great post! Cool stuff ... Kati and I are really going to try to instill reading in our little one, too. We've got a book shelf loaded with books.
